The Supermarine Attacker was the Fleet Air Arm's first jet fighter. It first flew on May 5th, 1950 and operational service began in August 1951 with 800NAS. Although it was a capable aircraft with good flying characteristics, it had the misfortune to come into service at a time when jet aircraft development was moving at breath taking pace. Consequently, it was soon moved to Volunteer Reserve units in 1954 and retired in 1956. It did survive in the Pakistani Air Force until the early 60's.
