The Fleet Air Arm and the War in Europe, 1939-1945 By David Hobbs
Regular price £35.00 Save Liquid error (snippets/product-template line 131): Computation results in '-Infinity'%For the first time, this book tells the story of how naval air operations evolved into a vital element of the Royal Navy’s ability to fight a three-dimensional war against both the Kriegsmarine and Luftwaffe. An integral part of RN, the Fleet Air Arm was not a large organisation, with only 406 pilots and 232 front-line aircraft available for operations in September 1939. Nevertheless, its impact far outweighed its numbers – it was an RN fighter that shot down the first enemy aircraft of the war, and an RN pilot was the first British fighter 'ace' with 5 or more kills. The Fleet Air Arm’s rollcall of achievements in northern waters went on to include the Norwegian Campaign, the crippling of Bismarck, the gallant sortie against Scharnhorst and Gneisenau as they passed through the Channel, air attacks on enemy E-boats in the narrow seas, air cover for the Russian convoys, air attacks that disabled Tirpitz, and strikes and minelaying operations against German shipping in the Norwegian littoral that continued until May 1945. By the end of the war in Europe the FAA had grown to 3243 pilots and 1336 aircraft. This book sets all these varied actions within their proper naval context and both technical and tactical aspects are explained with 'thumb-nail' descriptions of aircraft, their weapons and avionics. Cross reference with the Fleet Air Arm Roll of Honour has been made for the first time to put names to those aircrew killed in action wherever possible as a mark of respect for their determination against enemy forces on, above and below the sea surface which more often than not outnumbered them. The Fleet Air Arm and the War in Europe completes David Hobbs’ much-praised six-volume series chronicling the operational history of British naval aviation from the earliest days to the present.

HMS Ark Royal Norway 1940 Scale:1/700
Regular price £89.99 Sale price £79.99 Save 11%Designed in 1934 to comply with the terms of the Washington Naval Treaty, HMS Ark Royal was completed in November 1938. Her design differed from previous aircraft carriers as she was the first ship on which the hangars and flight deck were an integral part of the hull, instead of an add-on or part of the superstructure. She had two hangar deck levels and could carry a large number of aircraft. She was on active service at a time when naval air power was coming to the forefront of naval operations and many new carrier tactics were developed and refined aboard Ark Royal.
Ark Royal operated in some of the most active naval theatres of WWII and was involved in the first aerial U-boat kills of the war, the Norwegian campaign, the search for Bismarck and the Malta convoys.
A detailed 1/700 scale model of HMS Ark Royal - Norway 1940.

Atlantic Escorts - signed by WWII Swordfish crew - Limited Edition
Regular price £125.00 Save Liquid error (snippets/product-template line 131): Computation results in '-Infinity'%The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest and most complex campaign of WWII. Fairey Swordfish, launched from Escort carriers and MAC ships, played a huge part in winning that war. These wonderful aircraft, so well suited to the task, flew in all weathers and proved to be a superb deterrent to the German U boats, reducing allied ship losses to a minimum.
This limited edition print (250) shows Swordfish LS326 setting out on yet another cold patrol and has original signatures of veteran aircrew including those who flew in the Atlantic and one survivor of the Battle of Taranto.
It's a stunning image that will enhance any home and is an opportunity to own a piece of history. It is also a fitting tribute to the bravery of the pilot's and crew.
Supplied with certificate of authenticity.

Later they converted to Buccaneers (including for the British Honduras/Belize 'incident'). and then, ultimately, decommissioned in 1978. The Falklands War saw 809 briefly recommissioned to fly Sea Harriers to great effect. Decommissioned in December 1982, 809 is now, once again, an operational Naval Air Squadron flying the formidable F-35B.

Rolls Royce Military Jet Engine Flame Tube Lamp - Very rare.
Regular price £550.00 Save Liquid error (snippets/product-template line 131): Computation results in '-Infinity'%With all their noise and power, jet engines are awesome and dramatic. They can be just as awesome and dramatic after they have ceased in their primary role. This unusual lamp was once the flame tube from a Rolls Royce military jet engine.
Flame tubes allow fuel to be injected into the high pressure air and be completely burned before entering the turbine. Without flame tubes, there would be no place for fuel combustion to take place.
These examples have been carefully hand polished, mounted on a hand turned wooden base and fitted with a colour adjustable LED bulb. Perfect for some very unusual atmospheric lighting!.
Great lighting and great talking piece and you can be sure that your neighbours won't have one.
For Star Wars fans, you may wish to checkout IG-88, the assassin droid in The Empire Strikes Back, whose head bears a remarkable resemblance to a flame tube!

Supermarine Seafang F Mk32 Scale: 1/48
Regular price £25.00 Save Liquid error (snippets/product-template line 131): Computation results in '-Infinity'%The Seafang was essentially a Spiteful redesigned for RN Carrier use, with the addition of an arrester hook, folding wings and contra rotating twin propeller to eliminate torque effects.
The first Seafang flew in 1946; it was the first interim production Mark 31 VG471. Although 150 of the interim variant were ordered, only nine were completed before the order was cancelled as the urgency of an interim type was removed due to the end of the war.
Seafang Mark 31 VG474 was used as a development aircraft for the Supermarine Attacker including the fitment of power-operated ailerons and contra-rotating propellers. The Attacker was a jet-powered development of the Spiteful/Seafang design which used the Spiteful laminar-flow wing and landing gear.

Bristol Scout Type C 1/32 model Kit - Limited Edition
Regular price £65.00 Save Liquid error (snippets/product-template line 131): Computation results in '-Infinity'%The Bristol Scout was a single-seat rotary-engined biplane. It was used extensively by the RNAS, and also the RFC as a "scout", or fast reconnaissance type. It was one of the first single-seaters to be used as a dedicated fighter aircraft.
All later-built fighters continued to be called "scouts" in British usage into the early 1920s.
The first-ever Victoria Cross for the actions of a British single-seat military scout/fighter pilot in aerial combat against an enemy's heavier-than-air aircraft was awarded to Captain Lanoe Hawker, flying aircraft number 1611 with No. 6 Squadron RFC. Captain Lanoe downed two German aircraft and drove off a third on 25 July 1915 over Passchendaele and Zillebeke

Channel Dash Heroes Limited Edition print by Philip West - signed by mission survivor.
Regular price £150.00 Save Liquid error (snippets/product-template line 131): Computation results in '-Infinity'%As an operation, from the British perspective, the Channel Dash lacked any form of successful outcome. As an illustration of respect for duty and absolute courage in the face of insuperable odds, it stands as a beacon that would be hard to surpass.
Eighteen men in six flimsy aircraft against three capital ships, numerous destroyers and E boats all under a massive Luftwaffe umbrella. All six aircraft were shot down and only five aircrew survived.
This dramatic depiction by famed artist Philip West captures the moments after 825G has ditched and Observer Sub Lt Edgar Lee is helping his wounded pilot, Sub Lt Brian Rose, into their dinghy. Sadly, TAG Leading Airman Ambrose Johnson did not survive.
Originally a Limited Edition of just 100, we have just a few of these evocative prints available, all signed by Edgar Lee.

Sea Vixen Special Commemorative Pilot's Mirror and XP924 Model - 1 Left!
Regular price £599.00 Sale price £450.00 Save 25%This is a very special and extremely rare combination. A genuine pilot's cockpit mirror from a de Havilland Sea Vixen and a museum quality, handmade wooden model of Sea Vixen FAW(2) XP924.
We don't need to say how rare the mirrors are (chickens have more teeth!) and the model is the last to be made from this series.
XP924 was the last flying Sea Vixen in the world.
As was typical during the heady days of rapid technological development in the 50's and 60's, the numbers of each aircraft that went into service were comparatively small and active service life was relatively short. The Sea Vixen was no exception.
Very few examples remain even as museum exhibits.
The Sea Vixen was an example of the period of transition between relatively simple airframes of the early days of jet flight and the significantly more capable and advanced aircraft of later generations. A very powerful, but subsonic interceptor, it carried neither machine guns nor cannon as it was envisaged (incorrectly as it turned out) that aerial warfare had irrevocably entered the air-to-air missile age. The Sea Vixen was also capable of carrying a nuclear deterrent.
Both the dramatically shaped mirror and the model would look terrific as a combination on a desk or mantel shelf or in a display cabinet.
Please note that the mounts for the mirror vary in design and wood.
Please also note that the model depicts XP924 as she was in her final flying season and not as equipped while in service.

Blackburn Buccaneer S.2C/D (Plastic Kit) 1/48 Scale
Regular price £72.95 Save Liquid error (snippets/product-template line 131): Computation results in '-Infinity'%A mighty naval strike aircraft which can trace its origins back to Britain's response to a massive naval expansion programme by the Soviet Navy in the 1950s and the introduction of their Sverdlov Class Cruisers, the Blackburn Buccaneer was designed to have exceptional low altitude performance and the ability to effectively neutralise this new naval threat. Required to operate from the relatively confined space aboard one of Britain's aircraft carriers, this subsonic strike jet was the most capable aircraft of its kind in the world and a real triumph for Britain's aviation industry - it also happened to be the heaviest aircraft ever operated by the Royal Navy.
In order to allow its effective operation at sea, the Buccaneers design not only included the ability to fold its wings, but also the nose (radar housing) and rear speed brake could be folded back and split open respectively, allowing for more effective carrier stowage, whilst maintaining the aerodynamic integrity of the aircraft. Entering Royal Navy service in July 1962, there were no two seat trainer versions of the Buccaneer, so even though the pilot would have had the benefit of several flights as a back seat observer in the new aircraft, his first flight as pilot would therefore be his Buccaneer solo. Thankfully, the Blackburn designers included many hi-tech automated features in the Buccaneer's roomy cockpit, all of which were intended to reduce pilot workload.
There is something aviation enthusiasts find particularly fascinating about the operation of aircraft at sea and the intrepid aviators who flew aeroplanes from the heaving decks of aircraft carriers under steam, particularly when aviation entered the jet age. The unforgiving nature of these operations dictated that naval aircraft had to be extremely tough, in addition to being capable of carrying out the mission for which they were required, attributes the Blackburn Buccaneer possessed in abundance.
The introduction of the S.2 variant of the aircraft in late 1965 saw a major upgrade of the Buccaneer's capabilities, but centred around the adoption of a new powerplant, the famous Rolls Royce Spey turbofan. Possessing greater thrust and increased range, the Buccaneer S.2 was an even more capable naval strike aircraft and one which must have struck fear into the hearts of every Soviet naval commander. With its increased power, the S.2 was now able to land back on its home carrier with one engine shut down if required, but still having enough thrust to safely go around again, should the aircraft fail to catch the arrestor hook.
The Buccaneers of No.800 Naval Air Squadron were famously involved in the destruction of the stricken oil tanker Torrey Canyon, off Land's End in March 1967, as the government attempted to avert an environmental catastrophe by breaking open the vessel and burning its flammable cargo. Operating from RAF Brawdy, eight Buccaneers from No.800 NAS dropped 42,000 lbs of high explosive bombs on the tanker, achieving an impressive 75% success rate.
