Designed in 1934 to comply with the terms of the Washington Naval Treaty, HMS Ark Royal was completed in November 1938. Her design differed from previous aircraft carriers as she was the first ship on which the hangars and flight deck were an integral part of the hull, instead of an add-on or part of the superstructure. She had two hangar deck levels and could carry a large number of aircraft. She was on active service at a time when naval air power was coming to the forefront of naval operations and many new carrier tactics were developed and refined aboard Ark Royal.

Ark Royal operated in some of the most active naval theatres of WWII and was involved in the first aerial U-boat kills of the war, the Norwegian campaign, the search for Bismarck and the Malta convoys.
