The Fairey Gannet was developed for the Royal Navy and was the first fixed-wing aircraft to combine both the search and strike elements of Anti-Submarine warfare (ASW) operated by the Fleet Air Arm (FAA).

The Gannet, originally developed to meet a WWII era specification, was a mid-wing monoplane with a tricycle undercarriage, a crew of three and a double turboprop engine driving two contra-rotating propellers. The FAA would use the Gannet from the majority of its aircraft carriers throughout the Cold War and it was also operated by the Royal Australian, German and Indonesian Navies.

During the 1960s, the Royal Navy switched ASW operations to helicopters and several Gannets were adapted to perform alternative operations, such as an airborne electronic countermeasures, Airborne early warning (AEW) and carrier onboard delivery

The FAA took the Gannet out of service in December 1978 in synch with the withdrawal of the last of the Royal Navy's large fleet carriers.

Something of an ugly duckling, the Gannet was much loved by its crews and praised for its reliability, handling characteristics and functionality.
